Nvidia's System Monitor

Nvidia is the first company to finally come out with an app that allows the user to monitor their own hardware. It covers the Temperature, usage, and other information about your hard drive, memory,   cpu, and gpu. If your system is about 1 year or so it should read the properties of your hardware just fine. Nvidia’s System Monitor has a unique 3D interface which is a little over the top but it’s nice and runs smoothly. There are even sounds and different setting can be adjusted like the transparency, logs, temp reading..etc. This app does not only work on Nvidia’s hardware feel free to download it here.

  • Great interface
  • Accurate readings
  • 3D mode is something new

  • 3D mode may be sluggish on a 1gig system

Dropbox

Dropbox is the ideal online storage application that allows users seamlessly move content form their computer to an online drive that is connected only to their account. Once the files have been transported over to the drive they can now be accessed by any computer from that account. Storage space is never cheap, but Dropbox offers up to 3 gigs of free space (2 gigs rite away and 250 is awarded every time you refer a friend which adds up to an additional gig). With an upgraded account ,which of course always comes with a fee, there two plans. The Pro 50 gives you 50 additional gigs of space for $9.99 per month and then there is the Pro 100 which is an additional 100 gigs for $19.99 per month. I personally like Dropbox, the interface fits nice it’s just another folder on your computer and a small icon in your toolbar for account options, total space usage, etc. Their site is clean and clutter free and its pretty straight forward on how to use it.Security is nothing to worry about every page while your logged in is secured so you can enrure your files are viewed by you and only you. Dropbox can be downloaded here and you can even follow them on twitter. Have fun using this little app!

P.S it’s great for keeping those family photos on so you can always show your relatives.

Alternativeto.net

I have been using Alternativeto.net for about a month or so and wanted to really be able to use the site and find the good and ugly about the site before I wrote this article.  To get started Alternativeto.net is a website that simply gives you alternative programs or websites to a certain product you are looking for. For expample, if you search Microsoft Office, you would get

  • Tripy note
  • IBM Lotus Symphony
  • Open office
  • And many more results

The site finds programs for

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux

and also websites.

For the most part its a great site and very useful. There has been a few times were it could not find a alternative program to the certain program I was looking for but then again its still in beta.  I see alot of potentional in the site and right now its pretty solid.

To pretty much sum the site up if your looking for a better program or website then what you use already, as I do, then taking a look at Alternativeto.net is a great start to look.

Android: The Google Failure?

Android the new Google mobile operating system has been out for just six months but with only one phone running the android operating system. Speculation about the operating system was of much talk prior to its release but nothing much has happened since the release of the G1 phone running android. The technology will allow other cell phone makers to create and design new hardware for the android platform for a better competition against Apple’s Iphone. In my life this could possibly influence products I buy in the future but as of now I don’t see the platform truly inspiring Iphone developers or Apple itself to create a better product because it seems Apple already has a better product. The technology that has been produced by Google could possibly lead to a better iteration of the operating system and also make other developers take greater leaps to further themselves in the mobile operating system battle for the consumer. The only possibly negative effects that could happen is that if the android platform does not grow it could hurt the image of Google as a mobile operating system competitor.

But I regress, overall it seems that Android has a future in mobile products but its not perfect nor does it have the backing that Apple has had on the Iphone. The overall UI of Android is not very eye catching like some of the new mobile platforms coming out. Only time will tell if Google should be a mobile competitor, and that UI needs to change.
